Call to achieve sustainable development goals
Hyderabad: On the eve of World Earth Day (April 22), city environmentalists echoed the need for an improved mechanism to bring down carbon footprints, vehicular emissions, urban waste and protection of biodiversity. It is in sync with this year’s theme ‘Invest in our planet’.
Climate change campaigner, Donthi Narasimha Reddy told Deccan Chronicle, “Carbon emissions in Hyderabad are contributed by four sectors – vehicles, construction, industries and urban waste. We need to transition to E-vehicles and reduce the number of individual vehicles while boosting green building concepts and sustainable building materials. Industries ought to have efficient systems to decarbonize their manufacturing processes and introduce recycle and reuse concepts. We need to adopt target-based solutions.”
Experts also called for striking a balance between development and conservation of local water bodies and having more open spaces to break free from concretized congestion.
Technical member of water domain, BIS, B.V. Subba Rao said, “This is a need for holistic approach in bringing a balance between development and nature. We cannot have lakes, rivers and biodiversity in isolation. They must be integral to physical growth. We have to make amends to the damage that has been done and work towards achieving sustainable development goals, starting this Earth Day.”
