LG meets DGP on measures to check organised crime

The court would be approached for cancellation of bail or sureties forfeited of repeat and absconding criminals.

Puducherry: Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi conducted a review meeting with Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Kumar Gautam and other senior officials, on measures to check organised violent 'goonda' crime.

The Lt Governor directed DGP and other senior officials to start the day with a visit to a police station to meet beat and other officers to brief and debrief and to check records and their effective use which will lead to exchange of information, also help know if the ranks are performing to the best of their ability.

The historysheets of the anti social elements would be directly maintained by the Special House Officers (SHO) concerned and they were asked to update these with their own observations on the whereabouts of these criminals.

The court would be approached for cancellation of bail or sureties forfeited of repeat and absconding criminals.

The Lt Governor directed to maintain a separate log of action taken on police control room calls and caller informed of action taken. All preventive action must be taken under the law like preventive sections of criminal procedure code or Goondas Act to bind them down for crime prevention.

The meeting was conducted based on recent violent crimes and a surprise check made Saturday morning in a police station where it was detected that crimes records of rowdies was incomplete, the Lt Governor said in a press release.

"Three incomplete historysheets as inspected, were shown to the DGP. These revealed an apparent weakness in the surveillance of professional criminals leading to organised violence.", the press release said.
