Mosquito menace: Residents blame BMRCL, BMTC

They complain that rain water mixed with garbage and sewage has made the area a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Bengaluru: The residents of Malleswaram, Seshadripuram and Shrirampuram have a reason to worry, as mosquito-borne diseases are on the rise with the flooding of Metro construction sites and a bus-stand near Mantri Mall after the onset of monsoon. They complain that rain water mixed with garbage and sewage has made the area a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes.

BMTC has built a bus stand near Mantri Square Mall on Sampige Road to enable commuters to catch Metro trains towards Nagasandra. But because of poor maintenance, sewage water from the locality has flooded the bus-stand, making it unusable.

“A storm water drain is just 50 metre away and the authorities can easily drain out water from the area. But no one is taking the initiative. Quite ironically, the BBMP west zone office is right in front of Mantri Square Mall,” said Mr Shriram Hari, a resident of Seshadripuram.

“The vacant area below the elevated Metro line has turned into a dumpyard. There is a horrible stench in the area as drain water has mixed with garbage. We hope that BMTC, BMRCL and civic agencies will come out with an action plan," said Ms Sumati K. Bhat, a resident of Malleswaram.

A Metro official said that water logging near the Metro station is because of the rain. "The problem persists as it is a low-lying area," he said.

Metro prepares cops for emergencies
Bengaluru Police, headed by Mr Harishekaran, Additional Commissioner of Police (East), at Byyappanahalli Depot on Monday had a discussion along with MD, GM-Operations and other Senior Officials of BMRCL on the familiarisation of the safety and security in the Metro Rail System, for them to interact well during any emergency at underground and elevated sections in the Metro.
