NCESS's data bank to help predict landslides in Western Ghats
KOTTAYAM: The National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) is preparing a data bank for predicting landslides in the Western Ghats region, which will be ready in two to three years, Dr V. Nandakumar, group head of its crustal programmes, said.
“The Western Ghats is the most vulnerable area where incidents including landslides are a regular phenomenon. We are having an understanding with the National Institute of Technology, Calicut and other institutions for conducting the study" he told DC.
The proposed data bank can accurately diagnose the areas susceptible to landslides.
The NCESS) is studying case by case the government reports on landslides. Previously it had predicted incidents like in Ambury near Thiruvananthapuram. It will come up with remedial measures for their occurrences.
"However, it is difficult to resettle the population. For that we depend on the scientific land management as corrective measures for probable high-risk zones," Dr Nandakumar said.
The study undertaken by the NCESS is conspicuous in the wake of the recurring landslides in places especially Munnar and the absence of any solid strategy for countering it. This is despite that the study undertaken by various agencies found that Munnar is the most vulnerable place for landslides in the state in the wake of heavy rainfall.
