Madhavi in observation for secondary infections
Hyderabad: Four surgeons from Yashoda Hospital performed emergency surgeries on Madhavi, the young bride who was attacked by her father on Wednesday.
A deep cut on her neck had injured a major blood vessel which the doctors fixed. Doctors also repaired her arm which was nearly severed. She is on ventilator support and under observation.
Doctor Devender Singh, vascular surgeon, said, “She had a deep cut in her neck where there was injury to a major blood vessel and the nerves were also cut. Doctors primarily wanted to control bleeding and repaired the nerve going towards the brain. She had an almost amputated hand. We repaired the nerve and could salvage the hand. She is responding to treatment on ventilator and is hemodynamically stable.”
Madhavi bled profusely from her injuries and her haemoglobin count was low when she was admitted. About five units of blood was injected after which her haemoglobin count is now 10.
All the nerves connecting to her hand were cut off, resulting in a condition called ‘skin tag’, which the doctors fixed. Tendons on both hands were cut, which were also fixed with the help of Dr Ravi Suman Reddy, the neuro surgeon.
Dr Ram Babu, the plastic surgeon who worked on Madhavi, said, “We controlled the blood vessels, reduced the bleeding, and by isolating them tried to perform surgery on the blood vessels going towards the brain.”
Facial nerve is important, which shows movement, and could be stitched but our primary aim was to save her life. We cannot immediately say when she will be stable as she is under observation.”
Dr Sunil Dachepally, the orthopaedic surgeon, said, “Rods have been used to fix the hand. Surgery was completed in six hours, things went as planned. Doctors are looking out for fresh syndrome in which all functions may be disrupted like kidney function, indirect evidences, and cause infection. If there is no secondary bleeding then she can be declared as out of danger. Infections because of the sickle (that was used to hack at her) cannot be ruled out as yet.”
