Warangal: Citizens wade through drain water on bridge
Warangal: Irresponsibility on the part of officials is putting citizens to severe inconvenience at the Warangal rail underbridge.
The narrow bridge, for which go ahead was given for the construction of an additional vent in January this year, has been a nightmare for pedestrians and road users alike ever since the works began recently. Because of the construction works, the main drainage pipeline adjacent to the existing bridge has been blocked and diverted. However, the drainage water is flooding the road and creating a big pool right in the middle of the bridge and is causing the whole area to stink.
Pedestrians who need to go to the other side of the road have no other option but to walk through the dirty drainage water or they have to take the risk of climbing up the bridge from the side and crossing the railway tracks.
Even two-wheeler riders sometimes cannot escape stepping in the dirty water when there is a traffic jam, which is frequent near the bridge. This road connects Warangal’s busy business centre with the Khammam highway and experiences heavy traffic with a good number of cars and goods vehicles.
Citizens are blaming the authorities for the shabby works and demanding they rectify the issues as early as possible.
“We were happy when we came to know that the bridge is going to get an additional vent which would ease traffic movement. However, due to the negligence of the officials, we are suffering every day with dirty water on the road and the stink it creates. “We are ready to face a little inconvenience due to the construction of the bridge but letting the drainage water onto the road is horrible. It has been several weeks but no steps are being taken to stop the dirty water from flooding the roads,” said Basant Kumar Lahoti, a local businessman.
