Ahmedabad: The Congress has finally decided to take on the Modi-Shah duo in their fortress. The Congress Working Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body, will meet in Ahmedabad on February 28. This is the first CWC in the state in 58 years.
While Mr Gandhi is expected to continue his attack on the Prime Minister on Rafale, all eyes will be on Ms Priyanka Gandhi. Not just party leaders and workers, but even political analysts are keen to see how she takes on Modi and the BJP.
Ms Priyanka Gandhi did not address party workers when she made her political debut in Lucknow with a successful road show.
The party unit in Gujarat is preparing hard to turn the occasion into a grand show of strength. "We’re hoping around 5 lakh people will gather at the rally. Our workers are very enthusiastic since Gujarat is witnessing these historical moments and we will do all that is possible to make it a grand success,” said state party spokesperson Manish Doshi.
A series of meetings is on at the state party headquarters to prepare for the event.
State party leaders believe holding the CWC meeting in Gujarat is part of a well-crafted strategy, as the party has been focusing on the state where it performed quite well in the last Assembly election, increasing its tally.
The Congress lost all 26 seats in the last Lok Sabha elections and wants to revive its fortunes here. On February 14, Mr Gandhi addressed a public rally at Lal Dungri ground in Valsad district, which is believed to be lucky for the party.
The CWC last met in Gujarat for its 66th session at Bhavnagar on January 6-7, 1961, under the chairmanship of Neelam Sanjeev Reddy. Before that, the CWC was held twice in Gujarat. In 1902, the 18th session met from December 28-30 under the chairmanship of Surendranath Banerjee and in 1921, the 36th CWC on December 27-28 under the chairmanship of acting Congress president Hakim Ajmal Khan.
