Bengaluru: He stole, but why kick him to death?
Bengaluru: Mahendra Rathod, the 42 year old who died in custody at the Jeevan Bhima Nagar police station on Saturday night, who purportedly died from a heart attack, when he was being beaten to an inch of his life while he was being interrogated, confessed he had stolen Rs 3.6 lakhs from his employer of 13 years, minutes before he collapsed.
Rathod, told the interrogating police officials that he had hidden the stolen money at the home of complainant Purohit at New Thippasandra in Jeevanbhima Nagar. But here’s the catch — after the death of the accused in police custody, the CID are no longer investigating the case of servant theft (IPC 381).
Booty hidden in house!
"The accused (Mahendar) had confessed to our men that the stolen booty was still hidden somewhere at the house where he worked for 12 years. He had told us "Its there only, Its there only," however, when our men wanted to find out where he keep the money and asked about it to make a recovery according to Sec 27 of the Indian Evidence Act, that was the time he became breathless and collapsed after he was given water to drink. "
“He was rushed to Chinmaya Mission Hospital where he was declared brought dead,” a police officer said. “Since there was a confession from the accused, our men were only trying to learn where he had hidden the stolen money to recover it promptly.”
