Telugu Desam may lose Khammam base due to defections

Deserting leaders end the party’s 37-year legacy in district.

Khammam: With Telugu Desam politburo member Nama Nageswara Rao and several other senior leaders of the TD joining the Telangana Rastra Samithi, the party founded by N.T. Rama Rao has been rendered insignificant in Khammam district.

The Telugu Desam has played a major role in the politics of Khammam district for the last 37 years. The party bagged three assembly seats and one parliamentary seat in the district in 2009, and won two assembly seats even in the December 2018 election.

K. Madhava Rao, a political analyst and TD sympathiser, says, “The TD may remain like the Left parties in the future. Left parties did not win in a single constituency in the 2018 elections. Reviving the TD here in the near future is impossible.” He said that the rank and file members are shocked and shattered by this change of fortune.

The extinction of the TD began in 2016 after former minister Tummala Nages-wara Rao joined the TRS. This was the first big blow to the Telugu Desam and such blows have continued raining down on the party. Recently, TD MLA from Sattupalli, Sandra Venkata Veeraiah joined the TRS and there is only one TD MLA, Mecha Nageswara Rao, in the district. He is also expected to join the TRS soon.
