Calicut University slams colleges for norm breach
Kozhikode: The top brass of the Calicut University expressed their concern over the lax attitude of colleges in complying with its directions on different matters including admissions, exam, valuation and severely criticised principals for activities including union elections and arts festivals.
During the principals meet at the University on Wednesday, the officials directed them to respond to queries and stick to the rules.
Addressing 315 heads of institutions and their representatives, vice-chancellor Dr K. Mohammed Basheer said teachers had a significant role in catering the needs of students, and they should act as an agent to provide the facilities.
“University and colleges should together work as a team to deliver the best for the students and society,” he reminded. He urged teachers to support the efforts of e-content developing by the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC) by contributing in developing contents.
The controller of examination Dr V. V. Georgekutty criticised the colleges for not sending teachers for the evaluation process. “Most of the colleges are not sending teachers in proportionate number for the valuation camp. Some self-financing colleges had written us saying no qualified teachers available during vacation,” he said.
He criticised some government colleges who have decided not to send teachers claiming the varsity cannot endorse such decisions. "We believe that we are all working under the orders of the VC,” the controller added.
Director of admissions Dr Jose T. Puthur said despite the College Development Council sending communiqué to colleges inviting their suggestions and doubts regarding the centralised admission process ahead of the meeting, only four responded out of 430.
He also warned them against admissions to management quota before the stipulated time.
“We are getting a lot of unofficial reports regarding it, and it is a great injustice to students. If they get admission in merit quota in a later stage, they are not getting a chance to relieve from the management quota,” he added.
Students welfare dean P. Valsaraj lambasted at principals for playing politics during students’ union elections.
“Almost four years back, principal of Government College Perinthalmanna voted in an election against the rules. Principals may be ignorant in doing such things, but the university is not and will take strong action if anything like that found in future,” he said.
He also criticised those principals of colleges where students unions do not exist for not conducting arts festival.
Over 100 heads or their representatives did not attend the meeting.
