Over 40 per cent plus-2 students get less marks after revaluation

The revaluation results may effectively change the rank list for engineering counselling and the counselling for agriculture and BVSc courses.

Chennai: Many plus-2 students who have applied for revaluation expecting one or two marks more were shocked on Monday as over 40 per cent of the answer scripts had a downward revision of marks this year.

Teachers said many students who applied for revaluation in the key subjects like Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics have got their score slashed up to eight marks.

The revaluation results may effectively change the rank list for engineering counselling and the counselling for agriculture and BVSc courses.

“After the revaluation, nearly 1,500 answer scripts had fewer marks while 500 answer scripts had an upward revision of marks,” sources said. Answer scripts had an increase of maximum 13 marks, after the revaluation. The remaining answer scripts had no change in their marks.

It was quite a contrast compared to last year when nearly 2,000 students got upward revision of marks. D. Vasundradevi, director of government examinations said, “This year students sought the revaluation for 4,000 answer scripts. After the revaluation, 2,100 answer scripts had their marks revised.”

But she did not give the numbers of how many students got fewer marks this year. When asked about more students getting fewer marks this year, she said, “During the evaluation, one examiner will correct the answer sheets. In the revaluation, a team of three teachers will reevaluate the paper. So, each answer will be scrutinised thoroughly. We had clearly informed the students that they could get less marks after revaluation.”

The directorate of government examinations had received over 99,000 applications requesting the copy of answer scripts. After seeing their answer scripts students sought the revaluation of 4,000 answer scripts.

Apart from the key subjects, students also applied for revaluation of Tamil, History and Economics answer scripts.

More than 300 students wanted re-totalling of their answer scripts. “In re-totalling, we came to know that many examiners had made blatant errors while counting the page wise marks,” sources said.

It may be recalled that a student who had scored 200 in accountancy subject got only 140 marks as an examiner counted 60 marks less during the evaluation.
