Chetpet railway station assailant dies in hospital
Chennai: A 27-year-old man who attacked a 25-year-old woman and jumped in front of an MRTS train at Chennai’s Chetpet railway station succumbed to injuries on Friday, a week after the incident.
The city police confirmed that the attacker Surender passed away due to the injuries he sustained to his head after jumping in front of a moving train on June 14. The police, however, could not get a confession as he lost consciousness following the attack.
According to reports, Thenmozhi( 25) of Erode district who works in the city, resides in a private working women’s hostel in Egmore and works in a government office in Chetpet. Surender also hailed from Erode.
She was stabbed by Surender on the platform at Chetpet station when she was on her way back from her workplace to her hostel. Surender and Thenmozhi were reportedly talking when he suddenly attacked her, slashing her face and hand with a knife. Even before the police could apprehend him, the suspect jumped before the moving train and suffered a head injury. A team of doctors gave first aid to him before he was shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
An FIR had been filed under section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) with the SC/ST Atrocities Act. Thenmozhi, who has a fractured jaw and arm, is currently undergoing treatment and her condition is said to be stable.
Meanwhile, on Friday afternoon at around 3 pm, the doctors and senior police officials said that Surender died to his injuries.
Thenmozhi, who passed TNPSC Group 4 exam, was appointed as a Registrar of Cooperative Societies and moved to Chennai just three months ago. Surrender was an insurance agent working in Erode.
While the two knew each other for three years, Thenmozhi began avoiding Surender when her father turned down Surender’s marriageproposal. Thenmozhi is from a Dalit family while Surender belongs to the Naidu caste.
