Mizoram Steps Up Meiteis' Security Over 'Leave The State' Warning

Peace Accord MNF Retrurnee’s Association (PAMRA), an organisation of former Mizo National Front militants has asked Meiteis from Manipur who are residing in Mizoram to leave the state in the interest of their own safety. They further stated that there is anger among the Mizo youth over the barbaric and heinous atrocities committed on Kuki women in Manipur, the video of which went viral on Wednesday.

The statement issued by PAMRA ON Friday stated, “The situation in Mizoram has become tense and it is no longer safe for Meitei people from Manipur to live in Mizoram in the wake of barbaric and heinous acts committed by miscreants in Manipur. The PAMRA appeals to all Meitei people in Mizoram to leave for their home state as a safety measure.” It further stated that there is anger in Mizo youths directed towards Meiteis arising out of deep anguish over the barbaric and atrocious acts perpetrated by Meiteis against Zo or Kuki people in Manipur.

The association said that in case Meiteis choose to disregard this appeal and don’t leave Mizoram, they will be responsible for any eventuality that befalls them. Its secretary general C Lalthenlowa said it was just a normal appeal for safety of Meiteis from Manipur alone and should not be construed as a diktat or a warning.

There are thousands of Meiteis from Manipur and Assam who stay in Mizoram, including students.

In response to this public appeal, the state government has initiated necessary actions to provide security cover to the Meitei community residing in the state, especially in and around Aizwal, the capital city.

H Lalengmawia, Mizoram’s Home Commissioner and Secretary told PTI that the state government is making continuous efforts to ensure that no Meitei person is harmed. Police has been on alert in view of the prevailing tense situation. Government representatives had a meeting with the Meitei community as a confidence building measure and to assure them of their safety. He also plans to convene a virtual meeting of all the deputy commissioners next week to assess the situation.

Earlier, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga had assured Manipur CM N Biren Singh of the safety of Meiteis in Mizoram over telephonic conversation.
