Jagan's shift to Vizag: Police force being strengthened in city
Visakhapatnam: The Vizag district administration is gearing up its machiney to improve the civic facilities and beautify the city while efforts are on to strengthen the police force here as Chief Minister Jagan Reddy is planning to shift his base to Visakhapatnam on Dasara day.
The city police will have to shoulder more responsibility to ensure peace in the city and maintain high standards of security.
“I am ascertaining the size of additional forces that are needed to maintain high security here.The chief minister is covered under Z-category. I will also be needing two joint commissioners to lead the forces,’’ said the new commissioner of police, Ravi Shankar.
Talking to DC on Thursday, the commissioner said he would activate all the legal instruments. Asked about the presence of 500 odd rowdy sheeters in the city, he said they would be subdued much before the arrival of the CM.
On ganja smuggling and the spread of drug abuse, the commissioner said he was going through the dossiers collected by his officers. “The city has around 4,000 police personnel and some more would be added,” he said.
Assessing the merits and academic qualifications of the new police recruits, the commissioner said 30 per cent of these were suitable for training in cyber crime.
Another senior police said ganja smuggling activities would be controlled in the ASR district agency tracts and the surveillance on Maoists increased.
On the civic amenities, Mayor Hari Kumari said the city has been beautified for the G-20 summit, the Global Investors Meet and the international fleet review organised by the Navy at RK Beach. “All we have to do is to maintain them round the clock. We will also extend the underground drainage system to more areas,’’ the mayor said.
