Telangana government goes slow on corrupt officers

Cases referred to the HoDs take years for clearance and officials are let off with trivial punishments.

Hyderabad: Over 50 cases forwarded by the ACB to the Secretariat seeking permission to prosecute corrupt officers have been referred for inquiry in the last two years.

Whenever a government servant is booked while accepting a bribe or in a disproportionate assets (DA) case, the ACB, through its Vigilance Commission forwards a report to the Secretariat for approval to prosecute.

“In 2015-16, the ACB referred about 50 cases to the Secretariat and sought permission for prosecution, which was rejected. The requests were sent to the Commissioner of Inquiries (CoI) and the Tribunal for Disciplinary Proceedings.

While prosecution approval was given in the few cases, the rest have been pending. Records show 91 cases are pending with COI,” said former High Court judge Justice Reddappa Reddy, president of the Forum for Good Governance.
