Very few takers for STPs: BWSSB chief engineer
Bengaluru: BWSSB, which conducted workshops at various places on the installation of Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) or ‘gray’ water treatment plants for small apartment complexes with 20 and more apartments, is collecting feedback from its officials and apartment residents. Based on this feedback, the water board will write to the state government to extend the deadline to set up STPs.
According to the notification, buildings with a built-up area of 2,000 sq meters and above, including the basement area, shall install a modular sewage plant or ‘gray’ water treatment plant and dual pipeline within their premises, within three months of the notice.
Speaking to DC, BWSSB chief engineer Mr Kemparamaiah said, “We have served notices to apartments with 20 or more houses and individual buildings measuring 100 square meters. But some have expressed their opposition to the setting up of STPs, citing various reasons including space constraints, budget shortfalls and lack of awareness of various models of STPs.”
“In the workshops we conducted in different parts of the city, we had made people aware of the various technologies available for STPs,” he said.
Stating that senior officials will look into the feedback received, Mr Kemparamaiah said, "If the reasons given by the residents are genuine, we shall write to the government about the recommendations suggested by people and insist on postponing the deadline to set up STPs."
He continued, “We shall come up with activities to popularise the installation of STPs and shall ensure that the treated water is used for toilet flushing, gardening, washing cars and other non-potable purposes with the help of dual pipelines,” Mr Kemparamaiah said.
Besides making the residents aware of the various technologies and models of STPs which they can install, they were also connecting the residents with the experts and service providers, he said as he signed off.
