Karnataka: BJP to raise farm loan waiver during winter session, says R Ashoka

Kalaburagi: Leader of the Opposition in assembly R Ashoka said that his party would take up the cause of drought relief and farmers' loan waiver in the forthcoming winter session. He made the announcement following a visit to drought-affected areas in Kalaburagi district on Tuesday.

During his visit, Ashoka interacted with farmers, received their memoranda, and provided assurances of support. He inspected farmlands to gather firsthand information about crop losses. Ashoka, a former Revenue Minister during the BJP government, held discussions with officials to comprehend the gravity of the situation.

"This is my first visit as the leader of the opposition, and farmers have approached me, sharing their concerns. They have not received drought relief funds, and farmers who are facing difficulties also seek a loan waiver. In the upcoming session, this will be our priority," Ashoka told reporters.
Expressing concerns over the state government's handling of the situation, Ashoka urged prompt disbursement of drought relief without waiting for central funds.

Ashoka cited practices during the BJP government, highlighting that relief was provided from the state treasury during floods which was reimbursement from the central government later.

"Farmers have faced crop losses due to inadequate rainfall after sowing seeds twice. Despite their hardships, farmers claim that no survey teams have visited their farms. The BJP will address the issue in the legislature to ensure justice for the farmers," he said.

Accusing the state government of irresponsibility, Ashoka criticized the discontinuation of beneficial schemes, such as the state government's share in Kisan Samman and also Vidyanidhi, initiated by the previous BJP government.
