Chennai: CoP launches Student Police Cadet
Chennai: Close on the heels of Student Police Cadet project in Kerala, the city police have launched Student Police Cadet (SPC), a special police training for students on Tuesday.
The programme was launched at the city commissionerate in Vepery by the Police Commissioner A. K. Viswanathan, District Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram, Chennai District Education Officer, North, Gopala Krishnan on Tuesday morning.
Addressing the media, the CoP A.K.Vishwanathan said the project aims to inculcate in children respect for the law, discipline, civic sense, empathy for vulnerable sections of the society. This programme has identified 138 schools of which 95 are government schools and 43 government-aided schools. From each school, 44 boys and girls will participate and an overall 6,072 have been enrolled in the project.
For the students who have registered, the school will provide a khaki uniform, cap, belt, shoes and handbooks. The government would also give Rs 50,000 to each school for educational assistance, training and contingencies, he added.
Viswanathan said the programme is run by the police department, implemented jointly by the department of school and revenue.
The project trains the students to respect the law, practice discipline and civic sense, and develop empathy for vulnerable sections of society. It also strengthens commitment towards the family, community, and the environment, enabling them to resist negative tendencies such as substance abuse, deviant behaviour, intolerance, and other social evils.
The students are from classes eight and nine from government and aided schools.
Once a week, the volunteers will stay back after school for training taught by sub-inspector and constable from the nearest police station and two teachers.
