JNTU-Anantapur Vice Chancellor killed in crash
Anantapur: A ghastly accident on NH-44 claimed the lives of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Anantapur Vice Chancellor M.M.M. Sarcar, his personnel assistant and driver near Gajrampalle in Pamidi mandal on Wednesday, after his car rammed into an oncoming lorry.
The impact of the crash was so severe that the police had to use a crane to extract the bodies of the V-C’s personnel assistant Baba Fakruddin, 43, and driver K. Prasad, 34, from the mangled remains of the Innova they were travelling in.
Anantapur SP S.V. Rajasekhar Babu said Sarcar was scheduled to take part in a function organised by a private college in Kurnool on Wednesday evening.
When the car reached Gajarampalli in Pamidi mandal about 30 km from here, its front tyre burst. The driver couldn’t control the vehicle which was doing around 110 kmph, and it crashed into the road divider, went through the median and rammed into a lorry coming from the opposite direction.
The 57-year-old V-C, who was seated in the middle row died on the spot, while Fakruddin and Prasad crushed in the front row. Locals alerted the police and SP Rajasekhar Babu rushed the spot.
The bodies were shifted to Anantapur general hospital for post mortem.
Sarcar is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. A professor of mechanical engineering, Sarcar hailed from Pithapuram Colony in Vizag.
