Telangana explores MMTS, BRTS ride for Old City residents
Hyderabad: The feasibility of linking the Old City via the Multi-Modal Transport System or Bus Rapid Transit System more effectively is being explored by the state government in view of opposition to having the Metro Rail system in this part of the city. According to government sources, the Hyderabad Metro Rail team has been asked to study these options.
A senior officer explained, “The government wants to have a detailed report on the alternative systems that are feasible and those that can be further developed. Some meetings were held with various stakeholders to understand how the metro rail project in the Old City can be taken forward.” The government had earlier stated that the Metro Rail in Old City will require extension of the roads.
If that happens on both sides, many shops will have to go. That will entail a lot of cost in terms of land acquisition, reimbursements and shifting and redevelopment of various markets. With the project having a deadline of August 2018, Hyderabad Metro Rail has to decide on the groundwork to be carried out in Old City.
“There are too many stakeholders and a lot of conflicting interests on this side of the town. So, there has not been any breakthrough and consensus of the people is required, as this area is very sensitive.”
Metro rail to skip June 2 deadline
Metro Rail works from Secunderabad to Begumpet can’t be completed till June 2, say engineers at the ground level. There have been talks within the government to speed up the works and also meet the June 2 deadline for start of the services from Nagole to Mettuguda.
But the engineers say the works near Secunderabad ISKON temple will take time to complete. A senior engineer said, “The works at Oliphanta bridge will take a lot more of time. The erection of steel structure is a very challenging task. Hence this deadline is not feasible.” L and T Metro Rail are silent on meeting the deadline.
