Guntur to follow Japan model to be Smart City
GUNTUR: Japan's traffic and sanitation system would soon be emulated in Guntur to make it into a Smart City. The sensor-based traffic regulation for hassle-free travel being implemented in various cities of Japan will be adopted in a phase-wise manner to resolve traffic difficulties in Guntur city. District collector K. Sasidhar, Guntur Urban SP Ch. Vijaya Rao and Guntur Municipal Corporation commissioner Ch. Anurdha were among the delegates who visited Japan to study the traffic, sanitation, greenery, public transportation and others, as part of their tour. Sanitation would be carried for four days in a week in Japan and the same will be practised by GMC.
Further, Smart Cycles and separate paths for cycles and a traffic park will be started for Smart traffic management with the help of real time governance.
Mr Sasidhar said that solid waste management in Japan is very good as the sanitation staff will collect dry, wet and plastic waste separately. Wet waste would be collected on one day, dry on the other and plastic the next day.
He said that Japanese segregate wet, dry and plastic and would handover the waste to the sanitation staff. GMC commissioner Ch. Anuradha said that GMC was planning to introduce the solid waste management system in the Guntur city following Japan model. Guntur Urban SP Ch. Vijaya Rao said that durnk and drive was not observed in Tokyo, despite having 1.3 crore population. He mentioned that Tokyo has 1.3 crore population and a majority of the people prefer public transportation.
He said gold and blue ribbon driving licences were issued, two points will be deducted for every traffic violation and if anybody causes accident then that person's driving licence will be cancelled and he will not get driving licence in his lifetime. He said that each vehicle will be separated from the other by a minimum of 15-feet distance on the road, separate paths to cycles and pedestrians and there were no encroachments on the roads.
He said CCTV cameras were fixed all over Tokyo and traffic would be regulated through control centre. He said that sensors used for the counting of vehicles and roads were free from street vendors. Mr Vijaya Rao said that similar system according to our needs would be implemented and a traffic park in the city bring awareness about traffic norms among masses.
