Ooty: 48-day rejuvenation camp for captive elephants in MTR underway
Ooty: The post-winter break for 24 captive elephants, including kumki elephants at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) is underway and these elephants will undergo a 48-day rejuvenation camp.
Stating that all captive elephants will be provided complete rest and will not be allowed for any jungle related work during the rejuvenation camp, Mr. Deepak Srivastava, Chief Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore circle and Field Director (in-charge) of MTR, said that captive elephants at the various camps in MTR will be provided with a special rejuvenation camp diet along with necessary medical treatment.
The special diet includes green fodder, rice, green gram, horse gram, maize, sugarcane, jaggery, fruits, coconuts and a mixture containing vitamins and minerals, Chavanprash and Ayurvedic supplements, he added.
He said that the aim of the camp is to improve the health and mindset of the elephants. All captive elephants will be regularly examined by the veterinary team to assess their health status and give necessary treatment. During the camp periodthe popular elephant safari, for which the kumki elephants are used, stands cancelled in the MTR, he noted.
