Satellite imagery to help assess damage in Alappad
Kollam: The Kerala state remote sensing and environment centre will use satellite imagery to capture the view of Alappad shore, which is almost gnawed away due to sand mining, following a directive by the Kerala High Court.
This was based on a PIL filed by Hussain, a local resident of Alappad, pointing out that the mining in the area was a violation of the recommendations of the
Assembly committee report and coastal regulatory zone norms. It also said the mining had affected the fish resource in the coastal sea near Alappad.
The remote sensing centre has been included as the seventh respondent in the petition.
The satellite images of Alappad coast before and after mining will be examined.
The state government has pleaded for more time to submit a declaration on the measures taken to address the grievances of the local residents and to prevent loss of land due to mining.
The relay hunger strike by the local residents under the campaign ‘Save Alappad, Stop Mining’ launched from November 1, 2018 has gained more support.
