National seminar on honour killings begins in Tirupati

Tirupati: A two-day national seminar on "Honour killing in India – Socio Psychological Factors” began at Sri Padmavati Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV) in Tirupati on Thursday. It is being organised by the Women's Studies Centre and Department of Women's Studies in association with Centre for Women's Safety of SPMVV.

Inaugurating the seminar, Tirupati superintendent of police P. Parameswara Reddy underlined that such brutal criminal acts affect not only individuals but the nation as a whole.

“Parents are not accepting their children’s choice of life partners. When they get married to a person of another caste, they think it has brought dishonour to the family and kill them brutally. This trend has to be eradicated, as honour killings are a clear violation of Right to Life,” the SP pointed out.

Former SPMVV vice chancellor Prof. D. Jamuna referred to multiple psychological aspects that influence honour killings in India. She asked parents, who impose their will on their daughters to protect the family’s honour, not to undermine their daughter’s honour. “Honouring her choice is equally important for their honour,” she stated.

Presiding over the inaugural session, Prof. K. Anuradha said honour killings send shock waves down the spine of people. She asked girls to remain very sensible while taking each and every step in their life. Parents should also respect their girl’s choice, she said.

SPMVV registrar Prof. N. Rajani, seminar director Dr. P. Neeraja and co-directors Prof. T. Sita Kumari and Dr. Uma Devi were among those present.
