Supreme Court thumps up to Kerala bid for fair admission

The court said it was truly shocking and advised the government to prosecute the college.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Supreme Court approval on Wednesday of the High Court’s quashing of admissions to 150 MBBS seats in Kannur Medical College and 30 seats in Karuna Medical College in Palakkad is the logical outcome of a series of steps taken by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), and the Admission Supervisory Committee, headed by Justice J M James, to ensure free and fair medical admissions.

The 150 students admitted to Kannur medical college and 30 students admitted to Karuna medical college would have to vacate their seats as Justice J M James Committee had rejected admissions made by managements to these seats.

The apex court directed Karuna Medical College to admit, next year, the 30 students, whose claims for admissions were endorsed Justice James for 2016-17 but were not accommodated by the management.

The court came down heavily on Karuna Medical College, pointing out that admission documents submitted by the college were dubious. The court said it was truly shocking and advised the government to prosecute the college.

The CEE had earlier apprised the HC of its inability to ensure transparency in admission procedures in the two colleges because details of officials who made admissions to these seats had not been made available to it.

Based on the CEE report, the HC had directed spot admissions for Kannur and Karuna medical colleges through the CEE’s common counselling process. The CEE had published the list of candidates, who had registered online for the allotment based on the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test rank list to all MBBS seats in Karuna and Kannur Medical Colleges.

Justice James had cancelled all admissions made to Kannur, Karuna and KMCT medical colleges. KMCT Medical College later accepted the committee directive that admissions to all seats would be based on the common counselling process.

Justice James revised the admission made by Karuna Medical College ensuring inter se merit of candidates after retaining the admission of 30 candidates made by Commissioner for Entrance Examinations during the spot admission held on October 7.
