Hyderabad's Artificial intelligence sector grows, but job creation is dismal

City accounts for around 9% of AI related jobs in India.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s Artificial intelligence (AI) sector has been growing rapidly but is still behind in creation of jobs using AI technology. Most of the AI work is currently being done by the start-ups. Despite having a thriving start-up ecosystem and four major big companies, the number of jobs being created using AI in Hyderabad is less.

Hyderabad accounts to around nine per cent of jobs using Artificial Intelligence in India while Bengaluru leads with 37 per cent jobs, according to the data released on Tuesday by the AI task force setup by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2017.

In the recent past, the demand for AI experts had increased as it requires highly skilled workers who can develop and maintain complex systems and applications. AI is finding application in almost all sectors, including Banking and Finance, Life Sciences and Health Care, Aerospace, apart from technology.

According to experts, Bengaluru had a good head start with the start-up ecosystem while Hyderabad ecosystem is yet to mature and is heading swiftly.
“AI is a highly emerging technology and is penetrating into multiple usage points. Primarily, the start-up community is doing work in AI against the big companies and since Bengaluru continues to be the start-up capital of India and more AI jobs are being created. However, T-Hub Phase-II, sectoral policy on Internet of Things (IoT) and a couple of other technologies, if implemented, will certainly increase the number of jobs,” Cyberabad Security Council general secretary Bharani Kumar Aroll said.

Considering the significance being given to Life sciences, Defence and Aerospace industry, some experts despise the fact that Hyderabad is behind Mumbai or Delhi. However, Telangana state government is pushing the AI ecosystem.

In February 2018, during the World Congress of IT, the government had partnered with IT industry body Nasscom to set up a Center of Excellence (CoE) for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence with an initial investment of Rs 40 crore.

In October 2017, Hyderabad Software Enterprises Association (HYSEA) and International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) partnered to promote Artificial Intelligence and machine learning among the current engineering workforce.

“Since not much is being done from academia stand point to promote the latest technologies, we partnered with IIIT on AI. We will be running hands on workshop on AI and emerging technologies,” Aroll said.
