Greater Chennai Corporation seeks consultants for ITS

Recently, JICA entered into an agreement with the Government of India to implement the project.

Chennai: Moving ahead with the implementation of Chennai Metropolitan Area Intelligent Transport (ITS) System, the Greater Chennai Corporation has invited expression of interest (EOI) from consultants to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) to implement the multi-crore project that would mitigate city's traffic woes.

The project that would see the collaboration of Chennai Corporation and Chennai Smart City Limited will be taken up with the monetary assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the tune of Rs 500 crore.

Recently, JICA entered into an agreement with the Government of India to implement the project. The ITS project would be implemented as a part of Smart City Mission.

According to Chennai Corporation officials, the ITS would involve design and optimisation of city transport management services, public bus transportation systems and traffic management services to meet the increasing traffic demands in the Chennai Metropolitan Area. "The international level consultants can express their interest to prepare a detailed project report, bid processing and methods for implementation, supervision of the project," one of the officials said.

The official also added that ITS would provide integration and optimisation of the transport and traffic management services apart from real-time monitoring and control of traffic signals. The selected consultant would be directed to submit reports within 12 months from the date of issue of order.

Explaining the scope of ITS, the officials said that 350 junctions in the city would be re-designed in two stages. "Chennai Transport Information Centre at MTC head office will be set up to carry out the project. Also, a specified software will be developed to monitor and control the transportation system during the phase 1 of the ITS," the official added.

All the MTC buses running in the city would be fitted with GPS devices. Chennai Traffic Informa tion Control centre would also be set up at Chennai traffic police headquarters. Of the total 350 traffic junctions, 159 junctions are located in the core city area and 191 junctions are located in city peripherals.

To ensure the public participation in the management of city transportation, the consultant would develop a mobile application in addition to preparing citywide traffic and transport strategic plan.
