Salem: Social activist Piyush Manush who was arrested on charges of organising a protest against the green corridor Salem-Chennai highway project, was granted bail on Friday. However, actor Mansoor Ali Khan was denied bail.
Piyush Manush and Mansoor Ali Khan took part in a farmers' meeting at Thumbipadi on June 3, protesting against the Salem to Chennai green corridor highway project and Salem airport expansion plans.
Based on a complaint from Thumbipadi VAO Mari against them for inciting people against these projects, Theevattipatti police booked cases on June 17. They were charged under IPC sections 153, 189, 505(ii) and 7(1) of Criminal Law Amendment Act.
The two protesters were recently arrested within a gap of two days and lodged in the Salem central prison. Both of them applied for bail at the Omalur Judicial Magistrate Court. Following investigation, judicial magistrate Ramesh granted bail to Piyush Manush on Friday with the condition that he sign at the Omalur court every day. However, the bail plea of actor Mansoor Ali Khan was rejected.
