Hyderabad: NRI assets to face lien in nuptial row
Hyderabad: If the Ministry of Women and Child welfare finalizes the draft, the properties owned by NRI husbands will be temporarily seized by a third party until the dispute between the husband and wife is solved. Currently, a draft is being prepared which will bring in the provision to temporary hold the immovable assets. These alterations are done to further nail NRI husbands who desert their wives.
There are innumerable instances of young Indian girls who are either deserted by their NRI husbands or abused after marriage. There are also instances where the brides are abandoned soon after their marriage. In these cases, the women are helpless as the NRI husband goes unpunished as he is sheltered in a different country.
However, in order to curb the injustice to Indian brides and marital disputes, the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare are altering the provisions in the law ministry.
A senior officer from the Ministry explained, “An Inter-Ministerial agency of the ministry of WCD has formed a committee to look into cases involving NRI offenders. The committee is working on introducing ‘Escrow’, it is a legal concept wherein a third party will hold the assets of offenders and release it after the marital dispute is solved. The properties shall be purely registered in the name of the NRI husband in India.”
“We want to ensure that the NRI husbands cannot escape the country without being answerable. Their passports, visas could be revoked after a complaint,” the officer added.
With regard to marital disputes involving NRI husbands, the wife must lodge a complaint in the local police station and the Women and child welfare department, which in return will coordinate with the Ministry of WCD and Ministry of External affairs to nab the absconding husband by issuing a lookout notice and by revoking the passport.
