23 workers killed after under-construction railway bridge collapses in Mizoram
Guwahati: In a tragic incident at least 23 construction workers were killed and several others critically wounded on Wednesday when an under construction railway bridge collapsed at Sairang town near Aizawl in Mizoram.
Informing that authorities have launched a rescue operation as some workers were trapped in debris, state authorities said that they have recovered 23 bodies of workers so far.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the deaths through statements on social media.
The Prime Minister’s Office has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and a relief of Rs. 50,000 for those injured in the tragedy.
Prime Minister’s Office in a message on social media said, “Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected.”
Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga said, “Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations.”
“Shocked to learn about the tragic collapse today of an under-construction railway bridge in Mizoram, leading to loss of lives of several site workers, including some belonging to our Malda district. Have instructed my chief secretary to coordinate with Mizoram administration at once for rescue/ assistance operations,” West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said.
