Women's body wants bill reintroduced with 50% reservation

Visakhapatnam: All India Coordination Committee of Progressive Organisation of Women (POW), Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan (PMS) and Istri Jagriti Manch (IJM) has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi reintroduce the Women’s Reservation Bill enhancing reservation for women from 33 per cent to 50 per cent.

The committee charged that in its current form, Nari Shakti Vandan (Women Reservation) Bill of the BJP-led government is like a hot air balloon. BJP wants to use it for election propaganda. The committee said government-owned media outlets are already promoting the bill as a gift given to women by the Modi government.

The All India Coordination Committee demanded that the bill be made effective immediately and implemented in the 2024 elections itself. It must be delinked from census and delimitation, as they anyway have no relation with implementation of reservations for women. Sub-quotas for OBCs, SCs and STs must be accommodated within the bill.

The committee wanted the bill to be applicable for seats in Rajya Sabha as well as legislative councils.
