Yogi Adityanath mulls single Waqf board in UP

He explained, The government has got several recommendations and proposal from the concerned department is being finalised.

Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government is now planning to form a Uttar Pradesh Muslim Waqf Board by merging the Shia and Sunni Waqf Boards.

Minister of state for Waqf, Mohsin Raza told reporters here that this move would prevent wastage of money and check corruption since both the boards have serious corruption allegations against them.

The minister said the UP Muslim Waqf board when constituted will have members of both Sunni and Shia communities and its chairman will be selected from among them.

He explained, “The government has got several recommendations and proposal from the concerned department is being finalised.”

Quoting the Waqf Act 1995, the minister said that Shia or Sunni should have at least 15 per cent share in total Waqf units for constitution of separate boards, which is not the case in Uttar Pradesh where the Shias account for only 5,000 units of the total 24,000 Waqf units.
