Hyderabad: The month of December is almost coming to an end. But the winter season for which several people look forward to continues to elude the city, with the mercury touching a high for this time of the year. Weather forecasters say that this year could see a rather warm Christmas Eve. The temperature drop could, however, still be expected somewhere around the end of this month.
While the maximum temperature was registered at 28 degrees Celsius — the normal for this season — the minimum has been logged at 18.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday even-ing, a good four degrees above the normal of 14 degrees Celsius.
Perturbed with the lack of nippy winds and cold climes, residents have taken to social media to vent out their angst against the delayed onset of the winter.
One such user, K Vijeyendra, writes, “Even winter didn’t hit Hyderabad. So, 2019 has to be the worst year on all fronts for the city.”
Similarly, another social media user, Pratyasha Rath, says, “Winter is yet to arrive in Hyderabad. Last year was so much better. At least, could feel a nip in the air.”
Meteorologists explain and predict that the lack of cold winds passing over the city and the state have led to the winter chill being still far away. “There are no winds coming in from the colder northern regions. Instead, we are getting humid cloud-bearing winds from the coastal regions, which is creating a barrier and preventing the heat — that comes in during the day-from escaping,” Raja Rao Boddu, IMD meteorologist, told Deccan Chronicle.
This prevention of escape of day-time heat and lack of cold winds, he said, is treating the city like a convection oven, where the heat is radiated back on to the earth. “The heat that reaches the earth’s surface is not radiated back into the sky. This is why we have hotter climate during the night,” he added.
