Thiruvananthapuram corporation campaign for plastic-free capital
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of its effort to make the state capital disposable free by rooting out single-use plastic, the City Corporation is gearing up to launch a comprehensive campaign at public and private offices in the state capital to promote reusable and eco-friendly products for food packing and consumption.
Mayor V K Prasanth will be officially sending out an appeal to all the offices and educational institutions in the state capital next week urging the employees of private and public offices to boycott plastic. The plan is to launch a campaign with the help of the Green Army to popularise the use of reusable plates and utensils for food consumption.
There are around 1500 government offices, 3000 private offices, and 250 educational institutions in the state capital. “Since the launch of food delivery apps, the quantity of plastic waste has gone up. Food deliveries at offices during lunch hours have gone up. Our campaign aims at promoting the use of reusable plates, glass, and other utensils,” said a top official.
The civic authorities have urged online food delivery companies to use steel utensils for delivering food. “The volunteers of Green Army will visit all major offices in the state capital and educate them on the importance of switching over to eco-friendly products,” said the official.
The official said that the initiative will be launched at all zonal offices and Corporation office in the state capital. “We have implemented green protocol at our main office. For all official events inside the office we use reusable products,” the official added.
