S Nalini granted parole to attend father's last rites

Jail authorities granted parole to Nalini from 8 am to 8 pm on Wednesday to attend pay respect to the departed soul.

Chennai: S. Nalini, one of the convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, now lodged in the special prison for women in Vellore as life convict, has been granted parole on Wednesday to attend last rites of her father, who died in Tirunelveli district Tuesday morning.

Nalini’s father, P. Sankaranarayanan, (92), who was indisposed, died in Ambalavanapuram in Tirunelveli district on Tuesday.

Nalin’s mother, Padmavathi, approached superintendent of prison, Vellore and IG Prisons seeking three days of parole for Nalini to enable her to attend the last rites. She met her father nearly nine years ago and wanted to be with him during his last days.

On several occasions, she approached the jail authorities and court seeking parole to meet her ailing father in Tirunelveli. During her imprisonment for the over two decades, she had availed of only an ‘ordinary leave’ to attend her brother’s marriage, over nine years ago.

Meanwhile, efforts have been made to bring the body of Sankaranarayanan to Chennai from Tirunelveli and the last rites would be performed in the city on Wednesday.
