Ernakulam District Development Council demands probe into fires
Kochi: The Ernakulam District Development Council (DDC) which met on Saturday demanded comprehensive police inquiry into the recurring fires at the Kochi corporation waste accumulated at Brahmapuram. The issue was brought by Kunnathunadu MLA V. P. Sajeendran under whose constituency Brahmapuram falls.
It was pointed out that smoke and stench was spreading in 25 km radius from the area and these incidents are occuring after the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the project to generate cooking gas from waste. It should be probed whether these fires are organised at a time when development projects are progressing, the meeting pointed out. P. T. Thomas, MLA, demanded an inquiry by a team led by the district collector into these incidents.
He also demanded action against buildings which have been built in violation of the rules.
Fire and rescue department should also be given modern equipment.
The MLAs also demanded action to deal with the aggravating drinking water crisis in various parts of the district. The three-tier local bodies in district should be allowed to use own funds for drinking water distribution. Another major demand raised was to complete construction on Perumbavoor bypass and Kalady parallel road designing. ADM K Chandrasekharan Nair presided over the meet.
