ATM fillers seek better protection

The Association of Gunman and Security Guards here has filed a petition with RBI and DGP Lokanath Behara over the matter.

THRISSUR: The employees of private agencies who have been assigned the job of filling the ATMs by private and public sector banks have come up with a complaint that they are not provided with proper security while transporting several crores of rupees to the ATMs from banks.

They say that in all the major private agencies in the state no proper protection was being given to the vehicles used to transport the cash and they often are prone to attacks by criminal gangs while transporting crores of rupees to the ATMs.

The Association of Gunman and Security Guards here has filed a petition with RBI and DGP Lokanath Behara over the matter. “At times these employees of the agencies travel on motor bikes carrying huge amount of cash. After receiving the complaint, DGP Mr Behara has informed us that the matter will be inquired into,” Association’s president Antony J. Kuttencherry said.

An employee who work in such an agency, who wish to remain anonymous, said that he often transport up to Rs 3 crores without a gunman accompanying them.
“The bank managers are also not concerned about out security aspect. The agencies say that we have been given insurance cover. But, that does not prevent the criminal gangs from attacking us,” he added.

Mr Antony said that those with licences and guns were appointed by the agencies as gunmen to accompany the employees but due to shortage of such gunmen the employees of the agencies were taking the risk of transporting huge amounts of cash without protection.

There is also an issue of the agencies employing interstate workers with gun licences which could not be properly verified by the state police, he added.
