Rajya Sabha polls: Arun Jaitley, GVL, Jaya Bachchan win from UP

SP candidate Jaya Bachchan won another term with 38 votes, one more than the required 37 votes.

Lucknow: The BJP won nine out of the 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh while the Samajwadi Party won one seat while the BSP candidate lost the election.

The BJP had fielded an independent candidate Anil Agarwal on the ninth seat even though it did not have the requisite number of surplus votes.

Polling in the Rajya Sabha elections in UP on Friday were marked by cross voting and high drama.

Counting in the polls was delayed by over two hours on complaints filed by SP and BSP and then two votes were declared invalid by the Election Commission-one of BJP and one of BSP. UP parliamentary affairs minister Suresh Khanna who was present in the counting, said that the votes were declared invalid due to overwriting.

The winners in the BJP included Union minister Arun Jaitley, G.V.L. Narsimha Rao, Anil Jain, Sakal Deep Rajbhar, Vijay Pal Singh Tomar, Kanta Kardam, Harnath Singh Yadav and Ashok Bajpai.

SP candidate Jaya Bachchan won another term with 38 votes, one more than the required 37 votes.

A tough contest was seen between the BJP- backed independent candidate Anil Agarwal who got 22 first preference votes and the BSP candidate Bhimrao Ambedkar who got 33 first preference votes. The BSP candidate was backed by SP and Congress.
