Telangana Rains: Nagaram residents stage stir over floodwater

HYDERABAD: Angry over their localities being inundated with dirty water, residents of Sri Laxmi Narasimha Colony, Sai Rathna Colony and BMR Enclave at Nagaram staged a protest on the main road between ECIL and Kushaiguda on Saturday. Traffic came to a standstill for some time due to the sudden protest.

The protestors said dirty water from Jawaharnagar dump yard and Dammaiguda municipal areas was overflowing into their colonies and demanded that the authorities construct a nala and divert the water properly. Around 150 families are facing the problem whenever there is heavy rain.

Jagadeshwar Rao, one of the residents of this area, said, “Whenever there are rains, the water coming from Jawaharnagar dump yard and Dammaiguda municipal areas flows into our colonies. The rain water mixed with sewage emanates a foul smell all over and children are falling sick.”

Suvarna Prabha, another resident, said, “We have been constantly approaching the municipal authorities, but our appeals are unheard. Whenever there is rain, we sleep in fear that water may enter our houses. The government should consider our problem and help us.”

Meanwhile, at Begumpet and Brahamwadi, a nala overflowed and submerged the whole area. Residents complained that there was no help from the authorities, though it has been two days since these houses were inundated. Families are using buckets to flush out the water. On Saturday, some NGO’s distributed food for these residents.
