Kozhikode: 13 traffic junctions to go hi-tech

Rs 1.7 cr project by Keltron as part of City Road Improvement Project.

Kozhikode: By the middle of next month, 13 major junctions in the city would go hi-tech, thanks to the Kozhikode City Road Improvement project, undertaken by Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS).

The traffic signals that will be fully operated on solar energy, is being installed by Keltron. Officials from Keltron told this newspaper that almost 90 per cent of the works were over and the approximate cost of the project was Rs 1.7 crore.

“Traffic signals at seven junctions are fully operational and in four junctions, the installation works are over while in the remaining two junctions, works are progressing. The works would not go beyond the middle of next month,” said A. Hameed, marketing head, Keltron.

The road improvement project comes under the Kerala Road Fund Board. The 13 junctions where new signal systems are coming up are: Stadium, Puthiyara, Karaparamba, Eranh-ipalam, Kalluthanka-davu, Poolakkadavu, Kovoor, Gandhi Road, Malabar Christian College junction on Kannur road and Wayanad road, CWRDM, Pushpa and Mankavu.

“The signals are fully operational on the solar system and we have used a micro-controller based system for them. The countdown facility at the junctions would help save fuel and reduce jumping of signals by the drivers,” said Mr Hameed.
