Public hearing on MLA's check dam

Decision on P.V. Anwar's project today.

MALAPPURAM: The district administration will conduct a public hearing on Thursday to decide the fate of a check dam built adjacent to the water theme park partly owned by Nilambur MLA P.V. Anwar at Kakkadampoyil.

It will look into the allegations of flouting rules in the construction of the dam at Cheenkannipalli and decide further action.

District collector Amit Meena had earlier directed the concerned department to examine the possibilities of knocking it down. The hearing will be held at the chamber of sub-collector in Perinthalmanna at 4 pm on Thursday.

Complainants including tribes who approached the authorities alleging that it has affected their water sources can attend.

The representatives of geology and forest departments, Urangattiri panchayat administration and Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will also attend the hearing.

“Further actions regarding the demolition will be taken as per its outcome,” deputy collector J.O. Arun, who is in charge of the sub-collector of Perinthalmanna, said.

If a violation of rules and norm found in the construction, the district collector will issue a final order to demolish the check dam. The irrigation department had earlier been asked to prepare a plan to remove it.

The proposal may be presented during the hearing. The alleged illegal construction of a check dam in the ecologically vulnerable area was meant for boating near the park.

The landowner who is a close relative of the ruling legislator built it by digging a large area and allegedly blocking the natural flow of streams which is the primary source of water for a nearby tribal settlement in Cheenkannipalli.

The Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes had registered a case in connection with this allegation.
