Tamil Nadu: From 30 to 1,310 MBBS seats
Chennai: From just 30 MBBS seats last year, the CBSE and other board students are set to walk away with 1,310 MBBS seats which are an increase of 1,280 seats compared to last year.
CBSE and old students dominated the Neet based MBBS rank list, released on Wednesday following the Supreme Court’s order.
Roughly, 2,224 students from state board have qualified to join the 3,534 seats available under the state quota. Of these only 1,281 students are from the current batch and remaining 943 students are belonging to previous batches.
Of 23,832 state board students who applied for MBBS counselling, 2,224 are eligible for MBBS admission based on their Neet scores. Out of 3,380 students from other boards, 1,310 students are eligible for admission.
“The CBSE students found it very difficult to feature in the plus-2 marks based merit list as they could not get the 200 cutoff marks required for MBBS admission. Last year, only around 30 students from the CBSE and other boards got admission under state quota,” officials said.
“This year around 40 per cent MBBS seats will be taken by them. But, we expect the change in the scenario as the state board students also will give tough competition in coming years,” officials said.
Of the meritorious candidates, 70 per cent of them are from Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Namakkal districts alone.
After releasing the rank list, health secretary J. Radhakrishnan said, “The medical counselling will be held continuously from August 24 even in holidays until all the MBBS and BDS seats are filled.”
On Thursday, the counselling for the special categories like differently abled, ex-servicemen will be held. Totally, 60 candidates are being called for the special counselling.
The general counselling will commence on Friday. On day 1, 1,209 candidates called for the counselling.
The officials will intimate the candidates who are scheduled to attend the counselling on day 1 through phone and SMS.
As per the court order, the selection committee has to wind up medical counselling by September 4.
Two separate rank lists, one rank list for the state government quota seats in government medical colleges and private colleges and another one for management quota seats in private medical colleges.
