Hyderabad: Row over heritage cop station
Hyderabad: The GHMC on Friday served notice on the Ramgopalpet police asking personnel to vacate the building housing the police station as it is in a dilapidated condition. The 115-year-old building is a heritage structure, earlier called the James Street Police Station. The Ramgopalpet police functioned in the building even on Friday.
Ramgopalpet inspector P. Muralikrishna said: “We have received notices and we are trying to identify a building nearby for shifting. In the next two to three days, we will try to shift. This is an old building and the roof has wooden beams. The roof is leaking. The rear side has been damaged and we are not allowing staff to go there. We are only using the front portion.”
Minister T. Srinivas Yadav and Central Zone deputy commissioner of police V.B. Kamalsan Reddy inspected the building on Friday. There are other police station buildings which are 100 years old and yet to get notices. The Chaderghat police station in East Zone is also 100-years-old.
Heritage enthusiast Dr Mohammed Shafiullah said, “All heritage lovers should protest the proposed demolition of the Ramgopalpet police station, which is an icon of heritage in Secunderabad.”
