Udupi's 'cleanliness' campaign stopped after controversy
Mangaluru: Security was beefed up in the temple town of Udupi following the district administration's restriction on 'Kanaka Nade' of right wing outfits and 'Swabhimani Nadige' of progressive organizations.
As many as five KSRP and 10 DAR platoons were deployed near the temple. Barricades were erected at six places leading to the temple.
While 'Swabhimani Nadige' was finally cancelled, Yuva Brigade transformed 'Kanaka Nade,' into a cleanliness program inside Udupi Krishna Mutt.
The Yuva Brigade had declared that they would organise 'Kanaka Madide,' against Chalo Udupi. Meanwhile progressive organizations had declared that they would hold 'Swabhimani Nade' against the Yuva Brigade. Considering the seriousness of the issue, the district administration denied permission for both events, so Yuva Brigade restricted its event to cleaning the Mutt.
Pejawar Adhokshaja Mutt seer Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji said that it was a symbolic cleanliness programme and stressed on the need to cleanse onself internally. Yuva Brigade leader Chakravarti Soolibele said that the program was not a violation of the law. However leaders of Dalita Damanithara Horata Samithi who met the Udupi SP complained that Yuva Brigade had violated the district administration's order and demanded that the police book cases against those who participated in the event.
