Hyderabad: Inquiry team holds first meet

The commission is expected to reach Hyderabad by the second week of January and start its probe.

Hyderabad: Tasked with finding out the truth behind the 'encounter' killing of the four accused in the gang-rape and murder of the veterinary doctor Disha, the three-member inquiry commission appointed by the Supreme Court held its first meeting in Nagpur last week where the experts discussed the case details and chalked out their action plan.

The commission is expected to reach Hyderabad by the second week of January and start its probe.

The commission has also forwarded its requirements to Chief Secretary S.K. Joshi through the law secretary for setting up their office in Hyderabad.

The commission is headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Justice V.S. Sirpurkar and has retired Bombay High Court judge Rekha Sundar Baldota and former CBI director D.R. Karthikeyan as its members. The Supreme Court has granted them six months to submit their findings.

Top sources told Deccan Chronicle that all three members met at the residence of Justice Sirpurkar and held its first meeting after the Supreme Court appointed the commission of inquiry. The meeting, which lasted several hours, discussed various aspects of the gang-rape and murder and the alleged encounter.

While the police action was widely appreciated by the public, who were pressing for “instant justice,” the ‘encounter’ also came in for sharp criticism from certain sections who demanded a thorough enquiry into the circumstances that led to the gunning down of the four men. It is learnt that these aspects too came in for discussion during the Nagpur meeting

Besides, the commission finalised its requirements to set up office in Hyderabad to commence its inquiry. ''The commission has sought a premises to set up its office besides staff and other office paraphernalia. All requirements have been passed on to the law secretary who in turn has forwarded them to the Chief Secretary,'' sources said.

It is learnt that the state government will be providing the members with round-the-clock security and personal security officers (PSOs). Most likely, they will be given an accommodation-cum-office. The Dilkusha guest house next to Raj Bhavan is one of the options that is being considered.

When contacted, Mr Karthikeyan confirmed to Deccan Chronicle that the meeting took place in Nagpur. “It was an informal meeting,” he said. Asked when the commission would arrive in Hyderabad, Mr Karthikeyan said that the dates had not been finalised. “Certainly not in the first week (of January),” said the retired IPS officer of the 1964 batch who earlier headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
