Caste row: Family of Rohit Vemula seeks time
GUNTUR: The Dalit Bahujan Front to fight against the orders of Guntur district administration about change of caste of Rohit Vemula family members. Guntur district collector Kantilal Dande issued a notice to the University of Hyderabad research scholar Rohit Vemula’s mother Radhika, brother Raja, andsister Demimoor Neelima about changing their caste to BC from SC, giving 15 days time which ended on Friday. The collector asked the family members to present proof about their SC status.
DBF national secretary, M. Bhagya Rao said that Rohit’s grandmother who adopted Ms Radhika passed away last year and she gave her statement about the caste of Radhika to the officials. He said that according to the Supr-eme Court guidelines if the children were brought up by a single mother due to the absence of father, then the caste of mother is applicable to the children. So Rohit, his brother Raja and sister Neelima have right to get SC status. He said that they are consulting retried IAS officials, expert lawyers and constitutional experts to file case challenging the orders of changing to SC caste.
Rohit’s brother Raja Vemula said that the district administration gave little time. So they are seeking one month time to give a detailed reply to the show cause notice. He claimed that their family is a Dalit family belonging to the SC and alleged that the show cause notice was politically motivated to save BJP ministers involved in his brother’s suicide.
