KKNPP 3rd, 4th reactors to go on stream by 2023
Tirunelveli: The Third and fourth units of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district under construction will be commercially commissioned as per schedule in 2023, said D. S. Choudhary, KKNPP site director.
Stating that the second unit that is under annual maintenance will resume operation by mid-May, the KKNPP site director added that one-third of the spent fuel rods have been replaced with fresh fuel assemblies and the valves and pipes were being tested.
Moreover, the first unit is functioning well with its full capacity, D S Choudhary said, adding, that the 1,000 MWe first unit till date has generated 27,000 million units since it began commercial operations.
Further explaining the progress of the construction work at the third and fourth reactors, the site director of the country's biggest nuclear power plant said, the two reactors having an installed capacity of 1,000 MW each, under construction, would be commissioned as per the scheduled timetable by 2023. Excavation work for the fifth nuclear power reactor too is to commence soon, noted Dr Choudhary.
