Karnataka: Smooth drive continues to be a pipe dream here!
Bengaluru: Commuters on Banaswadi Main Road are in for more discomfort as the BWSSB has dug it up to replace old and corroded water supply and sewerage lines. The work , which has already held up traffic for about five days, is expected to take another 10 days to complete.
Earlier the Banaswadi flyover was closed to traffic as the BBMP resurfaced it for three days. Although the civic agency and the traffic police had given prior intimation about the likely traffic hold-up, there was chaos in the area as the police struggled to divert the traffic.
With the BWSSB now adding to their troubles, people of Banaswadi, Maruti Sevanagar, HRBR layout and OMBR layout are having a tough time reaching their destinations on time. And the already congested Lingarajpuram and Old Madras Road are seeing bumper-to-bumper traffic owing to the work in progress.
Mr K. Avishek, a resident of Banasawadi, rues that the diversion of traffic has added to chaos on the road. “Although we welcome any work to improve the road and flyover , the civic bodies must make use of modern technology and complete it at the earliest. The tax paying public should not be inconvenienced and no repair work should overstep the deadline set for it,” he stresses.
A techie, Vinayak Ningappa of Maruti Sevanagar feels the repair work should be taken up during the weekends to prevent inconvenience to people. “Diverting buses causes major traffic congestion and leaves commuters bearing the brunt of all the chaos,” he protests.
An assistant engineer from the BWSSB, Suhas, when contacted, said the work on replacing the sewage and water pipes had become essential due to the many complaints of water leakage that was also damaging the road. “The new bigger pipes will plug the leaks and stop damage of the roads for at least 20 years,” he added.
Revealing that the work had been given to Multi Fabs Engineering Contractors and Raghu Engineering Works, he said the portion of the road where the laying of pipes had been completed would be opened to vehicles and the rest of the work would be carried out at night and completed in the next 10 days.
