Kozhikode: Unlike previous years, Kozhikde has been witnessing a spike in the number of students approaching clinical psychologists due to the learning disability.
But many psychologists say that most of these cases can be handled by teachers and parents. However, they use such consultations as an easy way to pass responsibilities.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Nigesh Kalorath, a clinical psychologist, says that approximately 20-25 children approaching everyday complaining of learning disabilities. "But often these 'learning difficulties' are misinterpreted by teachers and parents as learning disabilities, and they claim a learning disability certificate to get help in exams," he says.
According to norms, Kerala State Educational Board candidates having the learning disability should submit the certificate in original to get examination concessions like providing a scribe for the student. IQ of such student should be specified in the certificate.
The number of students coming to the clinic to avail of a disability certificate increases during examination time.
"Certificates can be given to those genuine students, but students with learning difficulty need proper care than a certificate which can be given by teachers and parents whom they constantly interact with," he says.
"Further giving certificates and thereby providing a scribe to those undeserving students may wound their self-esteem." However, teachers deny such a trend.
Padmaja P., a school teacher from Malappuram, said teachers ensure proper care for children with learning disabilities.
"A child with such difficulties is taught to view the topics in comparison to the things which he is more familiar with," she added.
Studies show that learning disability can be seen comorbid to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) which should be treated clinically by attention enhancement training. Most often such cases are recognised just as learning disability.
