Mysuru: Kodagu received only intermittent, light to moderate rainfall on Friday even as the rain and landslide hit district limped back to normalcy. However 1,019 rescuers of joint rescue teams from multiple agencies who are still stationed at Kodagu, continued to screen every household in landslide affected areas. As many as 159 people moved to relief centres on Friday.
Among a total 7,594 people who were rescued and housed in 51 relief centres, most have made their way back home with 16 relief centres closed on Friday. Presently, 5,200 people are housed in 35 relief centres and measures are being taken on a war footing to prevent outbreak of epidemics. The Kodagu DC has already identified land for rehabilitation of the displaced people. Chescom has restored electricity in most of the villages, according to highly placed sources in the state government.
The sources informed, “A geo-technical team comprising experts from GSI (Geological Survey of India), NIRM (National Institute of Rock Mechanics), IISC (Indian Institute of Science), NITK (National Institute of Technology, Karnataka) Surathkal will be conducting a comprehensive geo-technical study of landslides in affected areas.”
Earlier an expert team led by former DDG, GSI, Dr H.M.S. Prakash had taken up geotechnical studies in areas affected by landslides from August 20 and had completed their studies. The National Geographic Research Institute has already set up a seismic monitoring centre in Navodaya school to closely monitor seismic activity in and around Kodagu.
“Employment opportunity will be provided to displaced people through MNREGA by involving them in clearing debris. There is sufficient stock of all essential relief material. They are stocked in transit warehouse established in Mysuru and will be transported to Kodagu. Meanwhile UIDAI has started issuing free printouts of Aadhaar cards to people who have lost their cards,” sources informed.
With people of Kodagu losing their ID cards, certificates and documents, the government will set up a common service centre at Kodagu, which will act as single window system to issue duplicate certificates, ID and documents. The centre will comprise officers from the revenue, civil supplies and transport departments, banks, school and collegiate education and other departments. People need not file an FIR with the police on the lost cards, sources said.
